Black Chana Stir-fry | Kadalekalu Usli

This stir-fry, famous in Karnataka, is a simple yet nutritious side dish that complements a variety of meals beautifully. Made with Black Chana, or black chickpeas, this dish not only brings a delightful texture and flavor but also offers a rich source of protein, making it an excellent addition to your diet. Ingredients

Black Chana – 1 cup
Peanut oil – 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
Cumin seeds – 1/4 tsp
A spring of curry leaves
Dried red chili – 2
A pinch of asafoetida
Grated coconut – 3 tbsp
Water
Salt to taste

Method:
  1. Wash black chana and soak in plain water overnight.
  2. Drain, then add enough fresh water with a pinch of salt and cook the black chana until tender but still firm. You can use a pressure cooker for faster cooking or boil them for 20-30 minutes over medium heat.
  3. Drain the excess water and set the black Chana aside.
  4. Heat oil in a pan.
  5. Then, add mustard and cumin seeds, and allow them to pop and sizzle.
  6. Add asafoetida, curry leaves, and dried red chilies.
  7. Add cooked black Chana, grated coconut, and salt to taste and mix.
  8. Enjoy this nutritious stir-fry as a snack or as a side dish to your meals.
