Peanut or Kadalekaayi Chutney (in Kannada) is an essential breakfast accompaniment in South India, whether in restaurants or at home. It’s crafted with roasted peanuts, chilies, garlic, cumin seeds, tamarind pulp, and black peppercorns.

Preparing this chutney at home is very easy and takes less than 10 minutes. Each household has its own unique version of this condiment. This recipe is adapted from my mom’s, and my husband and I love it!

You’ve got to try this and trust me, you’ll love it as much as we do!

Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup of peanuts
  • 2 dried red chilies, for color
  • 1 green chili
  • 1/4 teaspoon black peppercorns
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • a small marble-sized tamarind pulp
  • coriander leaves/cilantro
  • salt to taste
  • water as needed
Instructions:
  1. Dry roast peanuts and red chili in a pan over medium heat until lightly browned.
  2. Allow them to cool, then transfer them into a blender.
  3. Add green chilies, garlic, tamarind, salt, cumin seeds, black peppercorns, cilantro, and water as needed. Blend into a smooth paste.
