Sabudana Khichadi, also known as Sabbakki Chitranna, is a delicious breakfast dish that can be prepared in under 10 minutes. It’s a convenient lunch box choice made with soaked sabudana pearls, onions, tomatoes, peanuts, curry leaves, lemons, spices, and herbs.

Sabudana, also known as tapioca pearls, sago, or sabbakki is a starch extracted from the roots of tapioca and processed into pearl-like spheres. It is high in carbohydrates and has a neutral taste, making it a versatile ingredient for preparing various delicious recipes.

So if you are looking for a quick, delicious, and carbohydrate-rich meal, this recipe is perfect for you!

Ingredients:

1 cup sabudana or tapioca pearls, soaked overnight and drained
1 tbsp coconut oil
1/4 tsp mustard seeds
1/4 tsp cumin seeds
1/4 tsp urad dal
Green chilies to taste, finely chopped
5-6 Curry leaves
1 small red onion, chopped
1/2 of a tomato, chopped
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
2 tbsp gram flour or besan
3 tbsp peanuts, roasted
2-3 stalks of Cilantro, chopped
Salt to taste
Lemon or lime

Instructions:

  1. Heat coconut oil in a pan on medium heat.
  2. Add mustard and cumin seeds. Once they pop and sizzle, add urad dal and allow it lightly brown.
  3. Add green chilies, curry leaves, and chopped onion. Sauté until onion translucent.
  4. Add turmeric powder, sauté for a couple of seconds and add the chopped tomato. Cover the pan and cook until tomato soft.
  5. Gently mix sabudana and gram flour in a bowl, then transfer it to the pan, and add salt to taste. Stir well to combine. Cover and cook sabudana for 3-4 minutes on medium-low heat.
  6. Taste for salt and adjust if necessary.
  7. Turn off heat, and finish by adding peanuts, cilantro and a generous drizzle of lemon/lime.
  8. Combine and serve at once. Enjoy!
