Savory Oats | Indian Oatmeal Recipe

If you are someone who gets bored eating regular sweet oatmeal on a daily basis, then you must try this recipe!

Savory Oats is a flavorful oatmeal made with rolled oats, spices, and vegetables. It’s nutritious and filling which makes an excellent breakfast or brunch option for any day.

This recipe for soupy savory oats is one of my favorites especially to eat during colder temperatures. It’s simple to make too and tastes delicious by itself or with plain yogurt. I hope you try this recipe. Enjoy!

Soupy savory oatmeal made with rolled oats, spices and vegetables

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup rolled oats
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tbsp peanut oil
  • ¼ tsp mustard seeds
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds
  • a sprig of curry leaves
  • ¼ tsp grated ginger
  • half of a small onion chopped
  • Half of a medium tomato
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • ½ cup green peas
  • ½ cup diced carrot
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  • Temper mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves, and grated ginger in oil.
  • Add and sauté onion until translucent, then add and cook tomato until soft.
  • Add carrots and green peas, sprinkle salt, add turmeric powder and red chili powder, sauté, cover, and cook for 3-4 minutes.
  • Add oats and water, combine and cover and cook for 6-7 minutes on medium heat.
  • Serve warm as is or with plain yogurt. Enjoy!
