Sankranti Special Ellu-Bella

Ellu Bella Recipe

I know that I am a little late in publishing this recipe since Sankranti 2026 has already passed. However, I really want to document this classic recipe, one of my favorites, on my blog! 🙂

If you ask me what the best part of celebrating Indian festivals is, I would say it’s the food! I’m especially excited about the festive meal that comes with Sankranti. One dish I’m particularly eager about is the Sankranti special – Ellu Bella.

Right from the time I can remember as a child, Ellu-Bella has been my favorite treat. My mom would make it in large quantities during Sankranti, and on the festival day, I would get all dressed up and distribute it to our neighbors and family in packets, along with kabbu (sugar cane), banana among other things. We would then enjoy the rest ourselves. Once made, it would last for at least a month, and it became my favorite snack to munch on throughout that time.

So this ellu-bella mixture recipe is my mom’s, and it’s the best! It is made using five simple ingredients, which are perfect for the winter climatic conditions during Sankranti.

I hope you try this simple and nutritious recipe and enjoy it as much as I do every year!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup peanuts
  • 1 cup of small jaggery cubes
  • 1/2 cup white sesame seeds
  • 1/2 cup of thinly cut dry coconut
  • 1/2 cup roasted gram

Directions

  1. Cut Jaggery: If you are using a block of jaggery, cut it into 1/4 inch cubes. This process can be tedious and time-consuming. However, it is achievable. After cutting them into small cubes, spread them out on a large tray lined with paper towels or parchment paper and let them sit on the kitchen countertop until they are dry. It may take up to 24 hours. Alternatively, if you take the easier route and use store-bought jaggery cubes directly. Check if they are dry. If so, transfer them directly to a large mixing bowl.
  2. Cut Dry Coconut: Cut dry coconut into 1/8 inch cubes. After cutting it into small cubes, spread them out on a large tray lined with paper towels or parchment paper and let them sit on the kitchen countertop until they are dry. It may take up to 48 hours to completely dry. Alternatively, if you take the easier route and use store-bought dry coconut cubes directly. Check if they are dry. If so, transfer them directly to a large mixing bowl.
  3. Roast Peanuts: Dry roast peanuts in a pan on medium-low heat until lightly browned. Allow them to cool completely. Separate the skin of peanuts completely by hand-scrubbing and any technique that you know of, and discard it. Keep the peanuts aside.
  4. Roast Sesame Seeds: Dry-roast sesame seeds on low heat until lightly browned. Allow them to cool, then transfer them to a large mixing bowl. Make sure that the mixing bowl is patted dry and has no water in it.
  5. Roast Gram: Dry-roast gram on low heat until aromatic and lightly browned. Allow them to cool, then transfer them to a large mixing bowl. Make sure that the mixing bowl is patted dry and has no water in it.
  6. Assemble: Now that all the necessary ingredients are in the mixing bowl, simply toss them. You can also mix them using a spatula to combine evenly.
  7. Serve: Serve them in a small bowl and enjoy! I bet you can’t stop at one bowl; they are SO delicious!
