Heerekayi Palya | Ridge Gourd Stir-fry

Heerekayi Palya | Ridge Gourd Stir-fry

Heerekayi palya is a specialty in Karnataka. It’s a side dish to eat with rice and sambar/dal or rasam and is made with ridge gourd, mustard seeds, dried red chili, turmeric, and coconut among other ingredients.

The recipe is simple and definitely achievable in under 30 minutes. Simply clean and chop the ridge gourd. Stir-fry it in oil along with mustard seeds, chana dal, urad dal, red chili, onion, and garlic until the ridge gourd is 90% cooked. Garnish it with shredded coconut and enjoy.

Ridge gourd is a household favorite so I make this dish often, especially when I make plain tomato dal. Heerekayi Bajji is another popular snack recipe made with ridge gourd that you can try!
