Ghee rice is a flavorful dish made with rice cooked in ghee, along with spices, green peas, and herbs. It’s perfect for lunchboxes and creates a wholesome meal when paired with your choice of curry, yogurt, and a side salad.
We enjoy this simple yet delicious rice alongside chickpea curry, egg curry, paneer curry, and raita.

Ghee Rice in Rice Cooker
Ingredients
- 3-4 tbsp ghee
- a few cashews
- 2-3 cloves
- 1 inch cinnamon
- 3 green cardamom
- ½ tsp fennel seeds
- a pinch of black stone flower
- a pinch of mace
- 1 bay leaf
- slit green chilies add to taste
- ¼ medium onion finely chopped
- ½ tsp ginger garlic paste/powder
- 1 tsp crushed kasuri methi
- ½ cup green peas
- some chopped coriander + mint leaves
- 1 ½ cups rice you can either use basmati rice or masoori rice
- 3 cups water
- salt to taste
For garnishing(air-frying):
- ½ medium onion thinly sliced
- ½ tsp oil/ghee
Instructions
- Turn on the rice cooker and add ghee.

- Add cashews, cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, black stone flower, bay leaf, fennel seeds, and mace. Then fry these in ghee until aromatic.

- Add slit green chilies, chopped onions, and ginger garlic paste, and saute for two minutes.

- Add kasuri methi. Green peas, coriander leaves and mint leaves, and saute these for another minute.

- Add rice, water, and salt, and stir.

- Cover and cook until rice is cooked.
- Air-fry onions: In a bowl, toss thinly sliced onions with oil or ghee until well coated.Preheat the air fryer to 400°F for 5 minutes. Add the thinly sliced onions to the air fryer basket and air fry at 400°F for 5-6 minutes, stirring halfway through with a spatula.
- Add air-fried onions over the cooked ghee rice: Add the air-fried onions over the cooked ghee rice.

- Serve: Serve hot ghee rice with your favorite curry and side of raita or yogurt. Enjoy!
